What distinguishes a Render render from other product renderings - and what should you pay particular attention to with ceramics?

A ceramic Render relies heavily on material-faithful representation of the finest surface structures (e.g. glaze textures, slightly wavy surfaces), as ceramic products have particularly fine light and shadow behavior due to their glazed surface. Realistic highlights, fine bump/normal map for tiny waves and micro-roughness as well as subtly varying reflections are crucial.

For photorealistic results:

PBR materials should be used (with correct roughness/metallic values)

fine irregularities (e.g. due to bump/displacement) should be baked in

physically based renderers (e.g. V-Ray, Corona, Cycles) that calculate light realistically should be used

How are light and lighting optimally set up to make ceramics look realistic?

Light is the key to ceramic renderings. As in product photography, multiple sources (key, fill, rim light) should be used to make glossy glazes appear realistic.

HDRI studio environments provide soft, credible ambient lighting

Soft shadows provide natural depth and structure

Reflections and caustics (especially in the case of glaze shading) must be taken into account, ideally with global lighting

Which technical requirements (modeling, textures, workflow) are typical for efficient ceramic Render?

An optimized workflow saves time and guarantees quality - especially with many variants of the same shape:

Fine low-poly mesh + texturbaking: details such as glass irregularities should be integrated using a normal/displacement map - so the model remains performant

Texture library of rich zoom texture maps (min. 4K) for razor-sharp details, without pattern repetition

Rounded edges (bevels): avoid unnaturally hard edges, ensure realistically shining highlights

Modular workflow: templates for shapes and materials as well as scripts/automation help to quickly create scenes and renderings for variants
